A chatbot just beat web search at triaging lung symptoms

Researchers embedded a GPT-4o-based respiratory chatbot called LungDiag inside WeChat and tested it against ordinary web search in a preregistered randomized trial of 2,400 adults with no medical training. The chatbot group reached 70% overall accuracy versus 55% for web search — with the biggest gap on preliminary diagnosis. Published in Nature Health on October 5, 2026.

AI discharged a third of skin-cancer referrals on its own

Two UK hospitals let a certified AI medical device autonomously discharge patients from urgent suspected-skin-cancer pathways. Across 8,391 patients over 16 months, the AI sent home 31% and 25% of referrals at the two hospitals without a clinician ever looking — saving an estimated 2,851 clinician hours, roughly a 62% capacity gain. Sensitivity topped 98% for the three main skin cancers, but six cancers slipped through and were only caught by post-market surveillance.

Two brain types behind suicide risk in bipolar depression

Researchers at Southeast University and Nanjing Medical University ran a generative AI model over resting-state brain scans from 802 people and found that suicide-related brain wiring in bipolar depression splits into two reproducible subtypes — one rooted in visual-sensory circuits, one in rumination networks. The patterns held across two independent replication cohorts and tracked changes in suicide risk over time. The genetic and treatment signals are preliminary, but the framework points toward making suicide-risk assessment a biological science instead of a questionnaire alone.

37,000 AI agents ran a biotech company

Stanford researchers built a virtual biotech company staffed entirely by 37,000 AI agents — no lab, no payroll, no humans. The agents analyzed nearly 56,000 clinical trials in under a week, found a biological signal that predicts which drugs succeed, and designed a lung-cancer therapy a pharmaceutical giant independently built. Published in Science on September 17.

Test the ICU treatment on the twin before the patient

The University of Vermont landed the largest research award in its history — up to $38 million from ARPA-H — to build AI-powered “digital twins” of critically ill patients. The ReSCUED project will model each patient’s immune response in real time, so doctors can test treatments on the virtual copy before giving them to the person in the bed.

A photo of an ECG is now a heart-disease screen

Yale's CarDS Lab built a deep-learning model that spots transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy — a deadly, widely underdiagnosed heart condition — from a plain photo of an ECG tracing. Published in JAMA, granted FDA breakthrough-device designation, and now being tested at 13 US health centers.
