Enterprise agents get memory

TL;DR

Cohere launched North 2 today, the biggest upgrade yet to its North enterprise agent platform. The update adds cross-session memory, reusable skills, shared knowledge libraries, and granular admin cost controls — and it runs in the cloud, on-premises, or fully air-gapped.

What North 2 is

Cohere announced North 2 on October 5, 2026, calling it the biggest upgrade yet to North, its enterprise agentic AI platform. North has been generally available since August 2025 and was built from the start to run inside a company's own infrastructure — on-premises, hybrid, or fully air-gapped — on as few as two GPUs.

The platform is model-agnostic: organizations can run Cohere's generative models or bring their own. Cohere's pitch is end-to-end agentic tooling that stops forcing a tradeoff between security, intelligence, cost, and control.

What's new

Skills are reusable capabilities agents can call on, so teams stop rebuilding the same logic. Libraries hold shared knowledge and assets the whole organization can draw from. Memory lets agents keep context across sessions instead of starting cold every time. Applications lets users prototype decks, dashboards, documents, and lightweight apps straight from natural language. Automations adds pre-built process templates, a drag-and-drop visual workflow builder, and real-time performance monitoring.

New connectors link North to Slack, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Exchange, Jira, Linear, Notion, and GitHub, with financial data connectors to PitchBook, Crunchbase, Daloopa, FiscalAI, S&P Global, and FactSet planned.

The control layer

North Admin is the governance piece: roles and permissions, visibility down to the individual user and agent, token spend monitoring, alert thresholds before limits are hit, and flow control that defines consumption tiers by requests and token rates. Guardrails enforce at the individual agent level, autonomy policies restrict agents to actions they are authorized to take, and human oversight is required for critical decisions. Cohere lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 certifications, plus continual red-teaming and third-party vulnerability scanning.

LG CNS is using North to bring AI to customers across South Korea. Bell Cyber is partnering on North for government-grade security — CTO Jawed Ahmad said it lets his organization apply agentic AI inside its security operations while keeping the control, privacy, and data sovereignty standards its customers require. Cohere also says its work with NVIDIA produces more insights for fewer tokens when its models run on Blackwell and Hopper hardware.

Why it matters

Memory is the feature that turns a demo into a workflow. Agents that remember the last session stop making people re-explain everything, and shared skills and libraries are the practical answer to the consistency problem: one team documents what works, and every agent in the company uses it instead of taking a different route.

The granular cost controls answer the anxiety that has stalled enterprise agent rollouts — token spend with nobody watching. North 2 is bookable through Cohere's sales team as a demo; no public pricing was announced. If you are evaluating agent platforms, the thing worth pressing on is the memory story: how long context persists, who can see it, and what happens to it when someone leaves the company.
